Gargoyles and Grotesques are extentions on the roofs and columns of churches and monasteries, dating back to the Middle Ages.
They are designed as a mixtures of animals (chimeras) or of animals and humans.
Physical function: Directing rainwater away from the walls(waterspout) Mental Function: Scare demons away
from the church, scare the illiterate commoner into the church. Notre Dames gargoyles are probably the most well-known,
but with todays long-range telephoto lenses, gargoyles and grotesques  are also discovered,
which are located more or less hidden from the naked eye high up or behind projections and crevices on the buildings.
The hidden ones give the artist freedom for imagination, humor and satire.   Both with mythical animals and - human beings,
who hold the tongues of both the mob, the bourgeoisie and the clergy.
